The kitchen and dining room face north-east to enjoy the morning sun and south to the pool with views of Puig de Maria, while the living room is the centrepiece of the house and faces east and west to capture light throughout the day.
When we first visited the plot, we were surprised by the decided horizontality of the land the clean lines that the walls drew around the perimeter.Our aim was to create a house that would give a defined sense of place, not just through Mallorca or Pollença, but through this piece of land.That's why we decided to build a low, single-storey house with an open-plan layout and an extension into the landscape.
To reduce the apparent size of the house, we divided it into three separate volumes for bedrooms, living room and kitchen/dining room, each of different sizes to allow for different uses.
The three volumes are angled to the north to provide shade and soft light through the windows, and the volumes are also staggered in plan to create light and uninterrupted views from the main activity spaces.
The three single-storey structures are reminiscent of the simple traditional stone agricultural barns of the area.
Scale is very important in the house and all glazed doors and windows are 2.7 metres high, which is the typical ceiling height in an office building, creating a sense of grandeur.
The walls that surrounded the property are made of stone, so we built the house entirely from the same material.In this way, the Mallorcan tradition is recognised and effortlessly integrated into the landscape.This stone is also used in the interior of the main walls, so that this sense of place also flows into the house itself.The interior is not decorated, but a product of material, space and light."
